Summary on Grant Application Form
This research proposal is concerned with an experimental programme and matching numerical simulation study of the way gas can interact with a flowing polymer melt. Gas assisted polymer extrusion is a new invention that offers process improvement for existing extruded products and also has the potential to produce new micro-structured profiles. We propose to establish the key factors that control this process and model the flow using advanced numerical simulation. From the knowledge that we gain, it will be possible to optimise the gas assisted extrusion process and fully evaluate its potential for process and product innovation. We also propose to study a related polymer foaming process, where a foam structure is produced by the evolution of a gas blowing agent. Both experiments and simulation will be carried out and a further novel concept will be tested that may be able to produce an innovative micro=foam product.
