Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is to enable post-doctoral mobility. Dr. D Barton will move from the Physics Department at UMIST to the Department of Engineering Materials at Sheffield. Dr Barton will bring to Dr. Short's group the necessary expertise to probe in detail the physics of CW and pulsed plasmas used in the deposition of polymers. Dr. Barton will design and build a novel collecting surface incorporating a range of diagnostics (time-resolved mass spectrometry/ion energy analysis, ion flux probe, etc.). Most importantly, this surface will incorporate ion energy modulation that will be used to manipulate the energies of ions (or totally exclude ions) arriving at the collecting surface. This will allow for a decoupling of the ions without any perturbation of the plasma. In Dr Short's group. Dr Barton will become familiar with an exciting range of novel applications for plasma, e.g. in the fabrication of surfaces for tissue-engineered devices. Dr Barton will receive training in the use of XPS and SIMS for the analysis of the solid-phase plasma polymer deposits. Dr Barton will work specifically on the plasma polymerisation of compounds that have considerable relevance to biomaterials and tissue engineering.
