The aim of this work is to develop a new class of chiral metal complex specifically designed to have application in the asymmetric phospho-aldol reaction, the addition of H-phosphonates to carbonyl substrates.The phospho-aldol reaction is an extremely valuable process for [P-C] bond formation and forms the basis for routes to a variety of organophosphorus biomolecules with, for example, antibiotic, antiviral, antitumor and other enzyme inhibition properties.The new class of complex proposed builds upon our recently published example of the first use of chiral salan complexes of aluminium in asymmetric catalysis, these being at present, completely unexplored cousins of the more widely studied salen class of ligand in the context of catalytic applications. Such ligand systems exhibit a form of chirality relay effect seen also in other chiral ligands such as binap and it is our intention to exploit such effects in the design of ligand-metal composites with properties specifically direcetd towards exploitation in the phospho-aldol reaction. Our ultimate objective is h develop catalysts which (i) are air/water compatible, (ii) are tuneable, (iii) are easy to prepare and use under ambient conditions and (iv) deliver high enantioselectivities.
