Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of this proposal is to study an area of boron chemistry centred around metal boryl complexes, [LnM(BR2)x]. Inparticular, we intend to study the chemistry of the radical, Co(II) (bis)boryl compound [Co(PMe3)3{B(cat)}2] (cat = 1,2-02C6II4). This compound has already been shown to be highly reactive and to have an unusual structure with a close B....Binteraction. Specific objectives are to study this and related compounds as: (a) probes, in view of their unusual structures, for studying the detailed nature of the B-B bond oxidative addition reaction which is important in the formation of metal boryl catalysts. Many new deriavtives will be prepared and fully charactereised by structura and spectroscopic methods, (b) synthetically useful boryl transfer agents for preparing a wide range of element-boryl derivatives including p- and f-block species; preliminary results indicate a unique chemistry of radical cobalt boryls in this regard, (c) active and selective diboration catalsyts including asymmetric catalysis.
