Summary on Grant Application Form |
The focus of this proposal is the equalization of acoustic channels in reverberant rooms. Such equalizers can be used, for example, to improve the quality and intelligibility of hands-free communications devices, to increase the accuracy of automatic speech recognition systems, and to improve the realism of virtual audio systems. We are primarily concerned with the fundamental problem of assessing the feasibility of acoustic equalization with regards to measuring its performance and robustness under reverberant conditions. Recent results indicate that exact single-channel equalization is extremely non-robust. This project will establish a theoretical framework, based on statistical room acoustics, to investigate the robustness and performance of: (i) the general case of exact multi-channel equalization; and (ii) equalization schemes that attempt to trade off equalization performance for added robustness.
