Summary on Grant Application Form |
Superconducting and ferromagnetic groundstates are incompatible - no material exhibits both properties within a single phase. These competing interactions mean that the study of heterostructures containing materials exhibiting both types of ordering is a particularly rich field. The exchange in ferromagnetic thin films can influence the critical temperature of neighbouring superconducting layers. In this proposal we intend to fabricate an study layered materials of containing both ferromagnet and superconducting layers. We will use competing or cancelling exchange fields to chan< critical temperature of a superconducting layer according to the magnetic configuration of the ferromagnetic layers, as has been theoretically prec We will therefore build and study a superconducting spin-valve, and use this new structure to learn more about the proximity effect at feromagnet/superconductor interfaces.
