Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is becoming increasingly more important to be able to characterise materials at the nanometer scale and beyond, with the continuing development of nanoelectronics. What I propose to do in this project is develop and extend the capabilities of an existing STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope) system to be able to detect and spatially locate single electronic spins on or near surfaces. The measurement technique, one which is being explored by a small number of other groups in the world, entails applying a small magnetic field to a sample which is in an STM system. This field will cause the tunneling electrons to precess, and if the sample has paramagnetic regions, this spin precession gives rise to a radio-frequency (rf) modulation of the tunnel current, whose frequency depends on the sample g-factor and the applied magnetic field. By detecting this rf signal, it will be possible to locate single electronic spins on surfaces, and determine the coupling between spins and surfaces, and to obtain spectroscopic information. This would ultimately lead to an atomic resolution materials characterisation technique. The signal can be detected simply by measuring the rf component of the tunnel current with a spectrum analyser.
