Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent EPSRC funding of Liquefying Confining Gallium: a New Material for Photonics , Control of Optical Properties of Gallium Nanolayers With a Beam of Electrons and Broadband Spectral Characterization of Elemental Gallium Undergoing a Phase Transition has allowed us to develop experimental research on nanoscale nonlinear optic of solids on the verge of a structural phase transition, and recently advance into the study of lightinduced phase transitions in self-organized gallium nanopartides. We now ask for a visiting fellowship for a leading Russian theoretician, Professor V. 1. Emelyanov who will help us to develop the theory of optical nonlinearities in self-assembled gallium nanoparticles. This theoretical research will be developed very closely with existing experiemntla research program. The research plan will include the following sections: structral characteristic of gallium nanopartides and their growth mechanisms, optical properties of gallium nanoparticles, thermal and nonthermal mechanisms of phase transition in nanopartides and electronic nonlinearoties in nanopartides. Professor Emelyanov will come to Southampton for 3 visits of 12 weeks each (a total duration of 36 weeks) in the years 2001-2003. We will discuss experimental results and will advance theoretical progress in intense and stimulating discussions during the visits. Between the visits we will continue working on the project at our home institutions, communicating via the internet. This will ensure a cost-effective use of resources and good value for money for the EPSRC.
