This proposal brings together over eight years of research in Newcastle, initially on the photo-electrochemical detoxification of water, but later alms on the disinfection of water, as well as a unique combination of expertise in photoelelysis, rector design and microbiology. The work has focussed of late i the two key barriers to the commercialisation of this highly novel, and timely, Advanced Oxidation Process disinfection technology: the relatively tow photoactiviiy of the catalysts typically employed, and the very limited attempts to develop appropriate reactors having the necessary optimal mass transport, electrochemical arid photochemical charateristics to provide an effective shield against the increasing threat from chlorine-resistant pathogens. We now strongly believe that we have identified the mans by which these barriers can be overcome through a highly fussed rector and catalyst development proqromme.
