The software engineering benefits provided by automatic storage reclamation are becoming more and more important as programmers and organisations build larger and more complex systems. The use of garbage-collected languages like Java in substantial applications of commercial import has made garbage collection more important economically than ever before. However, despite many years of garbage collection research, researchers have insufficient understanding of the behaviour and lifetimes of objects ('object demographics'); indeed, there is evidence to show that long-held assumptions may be invalid for a wide range of programs.This proposal seeks support for two visits to Moss' group at the University of Massachusetts, a centre of excellence in GC research. Moss et al. have made some progress in debunking some of the myths of object demographics and in the design of novel collectors that take advantage of 'unconventional' lifetimes. The purpose of the visits are (i) to acquire a better understanding of the object demographics of real programs, (ii) to identify better lifetime estimators and better heuristics to guide memory managers and (iii) to investigate a novel proposal for garbage collection, the `dea3horder' collector. Furthermore, we hope that these visits will establish what we hope to be a continuing and very fruitful collaboration.
