Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main goal of the proposed research is to clarify the origin of the enhanced microwave surface resistance and non-linear microwave effects in highTc superconductors (HTS) and correlate them with the relevant types of defects via sequential (AFM, X-ray, MOR, SEM and Raman scattering) and simultaneous (EBIMA, electron beam-induced microwave absorption) study of their microstructural and microwave properties with a high (- 1 micron) spatial resolution. The results of the project should contribute significantly to the understanding of the role played by various types of the structural defects in determining the residual microwave surface resistance and power handling of HTS thin films. It will also offer a non-destructive scanning instrument for simultaneous structural and microwave characterization of thin films with a micron-level spatial resolution. In addition, the project should contribute considerably to better understanding of fundamental physics of the non-linear microwave effects in HTS thin films, in particular the origin of the anomalous filed effects in these materials. The project should improve the understanding of the effects of the film annealing conditions, oxidation and impurity concentration on the microwave properties of the HTS films and should indicate the ways for optimizing HTS film properties by suitable modification of the deposition and annealing processes.
