Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research deals with the use of water soluble container or bowl shaped anionic molecules in conjunction with metal ions and crown ether and related cryptand molecules to gain access to molecular capsules based on two or more of the container molecules. These components are preprogrammed to assemble into capsules, with the optimum conditions determined using a combinatorial approach, which also has the power to uncove other preferred structures. The new materials will be unique in supramolecular chemistry, and the associated architectures will have implications in materials science, molecular electronics, separation sciences, and drug delivery. With a new rang of water soluble container molecules that will becon accessible as part of this proposal, new applications in these areas are inevitable.
