The Edinburgh region already hosts centres of excellence in the key disciplines necessary to drive forward post-genomic science and ultimately to deliver the anticipated healthcare and industrial benefits. In addition to having RAE 5 rated divisions of Informatics and Biological Sciences (both of which contain active bioinformatics groups), the University of Edinburgh has world-class funded Centres in the key enabling technologies: DNA microarray technology (SCGTI), protein interactions (EPIC), spectroscopy, micro-manipulation and imaging (COSMIC), and microelectronics. There is a timely need to coordinate the research in these centres so that their potential for creating novel platforms for the rapid analysis of gene products and thereby accelerate the discovery of gene function can be fully realised. We propose to establish a Network through which novel interactions can be directed and rapid developments be communicated, both locally and throughout Scotland, but also to the wider scientific community, industry and the public. Network activities would be overseen by a part-time Coordinator whose roles would include: establishing and maintaining a W W W site to facilitate communication between Network members, organizing workshops to explore potential areas of collaboration, facilitating opportunities for interaction with potential industrial partners, hosting visits/seminars by external experts.
