The research aims to develop functionally gradient ferroelectric materials for sensor arrays. These will be based on novel, thick, dense-porous-dense laminates of ceramic produced by an environmentally advantageous aqueous tape-casting process. In order to overcome sedimentation in the tapes and hence loss of process tolerance, new techniques based on uniform particle size, high thixotropy and controlled flocculation are proposed. These will be underpinned by fundamental studies of time-dependent interparticle forces using a wet-cell modified atomic force microscope which will be the first such work performed on PZT ceramic powders. The importance of improved-performance ferroelectric materials for use in sensors and actuators and the need to eliminate organic solvents from industrial processes were both highlighted as priority items under Foresight. The industrial collaborator foresees a large market for the end devices made by this technology. The project is likely to yield a marked improvement in device performance, which will greatly increase the range of markets that can be addressed. It will also allow costand size-reduction of existing products through an ability to use smaller-aperture, less expensive optics.
