Standard procedures for the estimation of in-vivo ultrasound exposure can fail because they do not take account of non-linear acoustic propagationeffects, such as harmonic generation, shock-loss and acoustic saturation. As a result, information about safety is misleading, and regulatory controls have limited effect. The proposed program will provide the data on which to develop more robust and accurate methods for exposure and dose estimation. It will examine alternative parameters and their threshold values, to define small signal conditions for exposure measurement in water: these will include a non-linear propagation parameter, the spectral index and the source acoustic pressure. Acoustic measurements and numeric modelling will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of each. Alternative methods using tissue mimic liquids and correction for shock losses will also be explored. Tissue models of particular relevance to finite amplitude effects will be examined. All the methods will be evaluated taking account of the full complexity of ultrasound beams used with modern medical diagnostic ultrasound equipment.
