Fluid-structure interaction problems occur both in civil and in naval engineering. The forces generated by violent fluid-structure contacts can be very high, and often constitute the design loadings for the structure. Currently, great uncertainties exist about pressure magnitudes and duration, whilst existing calculation methods appear to be unreliable. Some progress in the analysis of impact problems was made recently within the different strands of engineering, but important questions such as a unified theoretical concept, a numerical model, scaling laws and design formulae are still unresolved. The proposed network will provide a plafform for researchers involved with violent fluid-structure interaction. The platform will cover the different fields of engineering - coastal, offshore and maritime - and will involve all aspects of research ranging from theoretical and numerical modeling over experimental research to actual design and development. The research network will organise regular meetings for exchange of ideas and presentation of results and a dissemination workshop, which will be open to interested parties, at the end of its lifetime. In addition, the network will provide for short term exchanges of researchers between the partners. The network is expected to define the current state of knowledge in the field, to identify the future research requirements and to initiate new research initiatives and projects.
