A request for funding to aid the formation of a Ferroelectric Materials Network is made with the aim of increasing the opportunities for information exchange and collaboration between the various academic and industrial groups working with or using ferroelectric materials. This will aid and increase the generation and exploitation of UK intellectual property (IP) in a field in which market opportunities are expanding at an above-baseline rate. It will also raise the profile of British science in this area, through an increase in the number of high quality publications from UK-based authors. A number of key issues, or themes, have been identified which require interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve step-changes in one or more fields. These issues form the framework for the scientific programme of the network: (i) the application of new theoretical approaches to materials design for specific applications; (ii) the development of new higher performance ferroelectric materials; (iii) the use of novel characterisation techniques to aid understanding of particular phenomena; (iv) the fabrication of materials in novel forms and using novel techniques; (v) the investigation of solution and interface chemistry involved in solution fabrication methods; (vi) the transfer of ferroelectric materials into micro- and nano-structured environments (vii) the introduction of advanced modelling techniques into industrial contexts.
