Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main aim of this proposal is to asses the validity of a novel, single-shot microwave generator. A essential first step of the research is to scale up considerably a cylindrical implosion technique, novel to Loughborough. This will require the basic concept of forming an imploding plasma liner from an exploding wire array to be investigated in a much extended time regime. Implosion optimisation will be achieved using numerical modelling. In the second phase of the research high-voltage pulses will be generated on a load, by combining the implosion techniques with a form of dynamic transformer pioneered at Loughborough. The final phase of the research will be devoted to the generation of micrawaves, using as a driver the system developed in the previous phase.Novel and unconventional arrangments will be investigated for switching out sections of the transformer seecondary winding, and thereby generating high-frequency pulses that are added to the basic hihg-voltage pulse produced in the transformer. Conventional techniques will be used to measure the resulting microwave emission.
