Summary on Grant Application Form |
A consortium of two universities and five industrial partners has been formed to find a new low-cost substrate for planar microwave antennas. These will be used in mobile communications for two main areas: third generation (3G) mobile phone and Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) products for high bandwidth wireless links to home and office. The project will involve the evaluation of existing products, and the development of new materials, both of which will be fully characterised. Three chosen materials will then be developed to the stage of antenna demonstrators to be put through field trials. In parallel, processing of the new materials will be studied with a view to reducing costs and minimising environmental impact. The objective is to reduce the total cost of antenna boards by up to 50%. This will give the consortium and ultimately UK industry a strategic advantage in both national and world wide markets in this fast moving and competitive industry.
