The polynomial eigenvalue problem (PEP) is currently receiving much attention because of its extensive applications in areas such as the dynamic analysis of mechanical systems and acoustic systems, the modeling of microelectronics mechanical systems (MEMS -- currently a very active topic of research), and the study of the linear stability of flows in fluid mechanics. PEPs are an important class of nonlinear eigenvalue problems that are less familiar and less routinely solved than the standard and generalized eigenvalue problems, and they need special attention. A major complication is that there is no simple canonical form analogous to the Schur form for the standard eigenvalue problem.The general aim of this proposal is to further our understanding of the numerical solution of the PEP, and thereby to help users to obtain the right results more quickly . The proposal has two strands. First, techniques to enable the quality of the computed eigensolutions to be tested will be further developed. Second, new and improved algorithmic techniques will enable solutions to be computed faster and more accurately. Efforts will be concentrated on methods taking advantage of the structure in the problem as well as methods preserving the spectral properties.
