The proposed research will investigate the structure, magnetic and electronic properties of new, layered oxide fluorides synthesised by low temperature fluorine insertion into mixed metal oxides with Ruddlesden-Popper or related structures. A particular feature of the programme will be the use of fluorination not only to modify the anisotropy of the magnetic interactions, but also to control the cation oxidation states, which are fundamental in determining electronic properties and the nature of intralayer magnetic exchange. The recent observation that fluorine insertion can result in staged structures, in which fluorine occupies only alternate layered positions, will be fully explored. The extent to which such ordering can occur will be .00000000000000000000000... ...-.The proposed research will investigate the structure, magnetic, and electronic properties of new, layered oxide fluorides synthesised by low temperature fluorine insertion into metal oxides with Ruddlesden-Popper or related structures. The extent to which such ordering can occur will be investigated together with its possible use for providing additional control of anisotropy and cation oxidation states, and hence magnetic and electronic properties. The work aims to produce new phases with interesting structural and magnetic properties, especially layered materials containing ferromagnetic blocks (perovskite related) which are linked through non-magnetic regions providing weak interblock antiferromagnetic exchange.-
