Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our research aim is to determine the quantitative nature of the interaction potential between two colloidal particles immersed in a nematic liquid crystal. A dual-beam optical trap will be used to fix the exact separation between a pair of colloidal particles. The correlated motion of the trapped particles will be measured and analysed to yield directly the interparticle potential. The potential will be measured as a function of particle separation and the orientation of the director. These measurements will be compared to current theoretical predictions and will provide a detailed experimental test of the accuracy of the theoretical approximations which although commonly employed remain untested.
