Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks funding to support travel of academics to the earthquake affected areas in Gujarat, India as part of the Eartquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT) Mission. The Bhuj earthquake of 26th January 2001 provides a unique opportunity to study the performance and failure mechanisms suffered by civil engineering structures when subjected to Ricter Magnitude 7.9 earthquake. The EEFIT team led by the PI will travel to India on 9th February and will spend about 8 days in the earthquake effected regions. The team will investigate the performance of structures during this very strong earthquake as well as failures that have occurred. Performance of different civil engineering structures including multi-storied structure, bridges, port and harbour facilities, industrial plants will be studied. In addition, valuable information on the local geology and seismographic data will be obtained. As in the previous EEFIT missions, this field study will envisage to learn valuable lessons on the performance and failures of civil engineering structures under the action of very strong earthquakes.
