Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research aims to provide fundamental knowledge on the effects of fuel-bound sulphur on sulphur emissions and sulphur-pollutant interactions in turbulent jet diffusion flames. Turbulent jet diffusion flames are simple in structure but at the same time share the fundamental physical aspects with applications like gas turbines, diesel engines and furnaces. One of the key issues is the re-assessment of existing sulphur chemical kinetic mechanisms by a systematic comparison of shock-tube and stirred reactor experiments with corresponding one-dimensional laminar premixed flame calculations. This provides the chemical mechanism that will be used in the conditional moment closure (CMC) model. The CMC is applied to turbulent jet diffusion flames. Effects of fuelbound sulphur are examined in the CMC context. Sulphur kinetics and sulphur-nitrogen interactions can be analysed dependent on flame region and turbulence levels. This will yield to a more profound understanding of what flame conditions determine pollutant formation and destruction in the presence of sulphur compounds and is expected to lead to recommendations for experimental studies at Imperial College and elsewhere.
