Grant GRIM64017 Rapid Load Testing of Piles in Clays included the calibration of model tests using full scale static and rapid load (Statnamic) tests on pre-existing instrumented piles at the EPSRC soft clay site at Bothkennar. Bothkennar has been closed without prior consultation with the investigators.A new test site has therefore been established with the co-operation of Expanded Piling. It is located on a deep bed of glacial clay which has the advantage of being more typical of British clay soils than the Bothkennar siteFollowing a full geotechnical site characterisation, instrumented bored and driven piles will be designed and installed in the glacial clay. Full scale static and rapid load tests will be carried out on the instrumented piles to calibrate new analytical methods for rapid load pile tests developed from laboratory model pile and soil element tests.
