Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal highlights the Department's needs for the state-of-the-art scannng laser vibrometer. These are now becoming an essential item for research within the ISVR. In particular the benefits of having a fully integrated and developed system, available to all research projects, means that the system will be fully utilised and maintained. It will also provide the opportunity for different approaches to vibration measurements and processing, opening new avenues for research, enabling maps of a vibrating surface to be measured and enhancing and deepening our understanding. The logistic difficulties of having many individual sensors, signal conditioning instrumentation and acquisition hardware and software is completely eliminated and the measurements are then more reliable, repeatable and can be made under better experimental conditions. The latter includes no mass loading effect, especially important at high frequencies, improved spatial resolution, the ability to measure in difficult environments such as hot surfaces or rotating bodies and fast acquision times, so producing efficiency benefits. The equipment will be a central facility supported by a dedicated technician, whose position will be part funded by the grant over the three year period.
