Summary on Grant Application Form
The fundamental question addressed in this project is as follows. Given the wave-form of a disturbance in a shear flog (e.g. channel or boundary-layer flow) along a rigid wall, how will this wave-form change when it approaches and passe over a join between the rigid wall and a flexible one and how will the flexible wall respond? We have previously studie this problem by means of numerical simulations and have also developed some of the required analytical methods. Th numerical simulations exhibited some surprising features that suggest the existence of fairly general physical lave governing the behaviour of waves passing from rigid to flexible walls and vice versa. For example, the kinetic energy c the wave always rises suddenly. The analytical approach already developed goes some way towards explaining th behaviour, but important questions remain unresolved. The methods will be further developed in this research project an used to elucidate more fully these physical laws and general behaviour. Such joins between rigid and flexible walls al found in many flow/structure interaction problems of engineering and biomedical interest. Keywords: Flow/structure interaction. Flow stability. Laminar-flow control.
