Collaboration with the Gas Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University involving analysis of data from a high Reynolds number facility, the Superpipe , is continuing. This proposal requests support for a two-month visit by the PI this summer. The objectives are principally twofold: analysis of cross hotwire data for Reynolds numbers up to 10M and preparation for a series of measurements in a rough pipe. Our understanding of near-wall turbulence is extremely limited without simultaneous measurements of wall-parallel and wall normal velocity components. Cross hot-wire data will supplement those already obtained with a single hot wire and allow physical interpretation using the concepts of active and inactive motion which require clarification. The variation of turbulence quantities with Reynolds number is vital for the correct modelling of wall turbulence both for control and large-eddy simulations. Recent work by the PI and colleagues at Princeton has shown that the Moody diagram as presently consituted, is flawed with errors in the so-called transitional roughness regime being typically 25%. It is clear that the Moody diagram requires significant revision, in terms of both its functional form and the data used for empirical correlation. The Superpipe is a unique facility in the world and allows accurate measurement of friction factor for a variety of roughness heights and types. It also permits detailed studies of the effects of Reynolds number on wall turbulence.
