Summary on Grant Application Form
Experimental WorkRotor open water test performance parameters (shaft torque, axial thrust, blade bending moments, revolutions per minute) will be investigated in the University of Glasgows deep wave/towing tank. These model tests will be performed with Froude scaling because the wave effects are of primary interest in these tests. Current will be represented by moving the rotor assembly along the tank. The Doppler shifted wave encounter period is the wave period that would be measured by the turbine but to allow properly for full scale current-wave interaction effects the scaled wave period generated in the tank is, in fact, the period that determines the particle kinematics. Analytical workA computer program will be written to model the dynamic response of a current turbine subject to a combination of current, waves, yaw error and vertical sheer. Particular attention will be paid to the performance of rotors near the free surface. A theoretical investigation of the effects of surface waves, which alter the incident velocity vector (variation of CL with incidence angle is important), will also be made. Added mass effects, ignored in the wind, will also be important for a current turbine.
