The study aims to explore novel techniques for the assessment of visuo-spatial neglect by analysing the responses from a series of neuropsychological drawing tests. An initial study by the applicant has demonstrated that constructional aspects of hand-drawn test execution as well as a static algorithmic assessment of the completed drawing produces an enhanced objective and quantifiable measure of patient performance within simple object cancellation tasks. The proposed study intends to develop and apply techniques for the assessment of standardised geometric shape drawings. It is envisaged that these techniques can be applied generically to on-line drawing and handwriting analysis applications. A demonstrator of the devised techniques will be constructed. A small scale hospital-based trial will assess the performance of both the devised drawing features and the robustness of the engineered software within a clinical setting. In engineering the software, particular emphasis will be placed on developing a suitable userinterface and documentation. The study also aims to explore test response data collected in both the proposed and a previous trial to investigate the relationship between test performance defined by the developed features and rehabilitation factors such as patient characteristics and stroke location.
