Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall purpose of the project is to explore and quantify the potential benefits that may be gained by employing more than three phases in an induction motor drive. These benefits include increased efficiency, reduced pulsating torques, and a higher degree of fault tolerence. The first part of the project will involve the development and verification of mathematical models that will allow both the symmetrical (un-faulted) and asymmetrical (faulted) behaviour of a multiphase machine to be represented. In the remainder of the project, the investigators will use these tools to assess multiphase technology as applied to induction motor drives over a wide range of outputs, from a few hundred watts up to tens of megawatts. The assessment will be made on the basis of improved performance versus cost, as compared to the conventional three-phase equivalent. The inherent faufttolerence of multiphase machines will also be explored, along with the possibility of futher enhancing fault tolerence by automatically reconfiguring the excitation after a fault has occured.
