Summary on Grant Application Form
The dynamic grain growth (grain growth occuring during deformation) of a series of model aluminium alloys will be investigated. Recent modellling work has shown that purely geometrical effects of deformation can lead to instability of grain structure in particle (Zener) pinned systems under conditions where grain boundary migration is sufficiently rapid, compared to the strain rate. Such geometric instability will depend onthe mode of deformation as well as the particle and solute content of the alloy. The stability of the pinning particles, as well as their size and spatial distributions, and the spatial geometry and orientation distrbution of the grain structure are likely to be significant factors. There is some evidence that discontinuous dynamic grain growth can occur under certain circumstances, which would be generally undersirable. By a combination of experimental and modelling work, it should be possible to clarify the microstructural features which control dynamic grain growth, and so help with the design of alloys to be formed at high temperatures and slow strain rates.
