Abstract of proposed research (not exceeding 100 words) Dark field transmission electron microscopy will be used to examine the distortions in the director field around particles in liquid crystalline polymers. Three different types are available to us - two side chain and one flexible-spacer main chain. Parameters to be studied include the effect of anisotropy in the elastic constants, the effect of changing the particle surface chemistry, the distance over which distortions die away (to provide a measure of the correlation length); and the way in which the particles line up due to thedistortions introduced in the director field. -
