Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research involves taking currently available constitutive models for stiff clay (e.g. nonlinear elastic-plastic, bounding surface and bubble models), implementing them where necessary into a finite element code, and then using the finite element code to analyse boundary value problems.Comparison with field data will then be made to establish the relative merits of these models and their ability to accurately predict field behaviour. The field data, against which the predictions will be compared, will be taken from three recently constructed projects involved with the Jubilee Line Extension (i.e. St. James's Park, The Treasury and Westminster). These projects involve the behaviour of London Clay at small strain levels and changes in the direction of the imposed stress paths during construction. To obtain the necessary input parameters for the constitutive models a review of available laboratory data for London Clay will be made.
