Summary on Grant Application Form
Convergence of digital broadcasting and webcasting imply a massive increase in demand for programme material. With finite resources the only answer to bridging the gap between channel capacity and content availability is to find a way to improve the production:comsuption ratio. We term this the content economy problem . We believe that a solution exists in using the potential of these new media for interactivity, but only if we can solve the fundamental paradox of interactive narrative, i.e. narrative implies constraint and interactivity implies freedom. We propose an architecture where the solution is negotiated by two agents with opposing goals. The Narrative Constraint Matrix (NCM) is responsible for maximizing the space for interactive possibilities while the Narrative Knowledge Engine (NKE) restricts possibilities to guarantee story coherence. NCM proposes solutions according to constraints derived from media suitability, user interactions and artistic heuristics. NKE allows only solutions that conform to selected story structures. Coherent story structures are described and represented in ontologies and knowledge bases. Hence, the proposed project attempts to confirm the following hypotheses: The tension raised by interactive narrative can be solved by constructing a framework within which the NCM and NKE negotiate the narrative. A real TV series (riny Planets) will be used to create an exemplar consisting of a working demonstration of such a system, tools for its creation and reports and guidelines outlining the approach, which could be used by industry for other productions.
