Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. Although much is known about the action and effectiveness of specific weathering processes and the controls exerted by specific stone properties, uncertainty persists with regard to the prediction of stone response to the environment and the alteration of stone properties over time. This project aims to improve understanding of complex weathering through the incorporation of high magnitude, low frequency weathering events into a regime of low magnitude, high frequency weathering cycles. Through systematic analysis of stone samples before, during and after experimentation it should be possible to identify and model the dynamics of decay with specific emphasis on the early stages of deterioration before obvious failure has occurred. These are the stages when there are subtle changes taking place in structural and mineralogical properties that are the precursors to failure. Test results and the decay model will be evaluated against long-term behaviour of stone on buildings with emphasis on the behaviour of Leinster granite and Portland limestone in Trinity College Dublin.
