The proposed work will combine both leading-edge experimental and theoretical efforts in order to gain fundamental understanding at the mesoscale level and derive models for the prediction of phase inversion at the process level. Experimental study will be undertaken at the mesoscale at both Imperial College (IC) and University College London (UCL), whilst process-level studies shall also be undertaken at UCL. The experimental work at IC will exploit novel visualisation techniques, such as photochromic dye tracing. The work at UCL will concentrate on measurements in large-scale flows; both mesoscale, (i.e local flow) and process level (i.e. liquid properties) parameters will be studied. Explicit numerical simulation (ENS) of phase inversion at the mesoscale level shall be conducted at Edinburgh University (EU); this work will be validated against data obtained from the mesoscale experiments. Applied models for use at the process level will be derived and parameterised on the basis of the mesoscale simulation and experimental work, and validated against data obtained from the process-level experiments - this work will be undertaken jointly by IC and UCL. The work at EU will utilise lattice gas automata (LGA) based ENS, which is uniquely suited to the problem, whilst the applied models shall be solved using novel MonteCarlo methods.
