Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposals seeks to capitalise on the discovery that highly active Ru-on-mesoporous-silica catalysts are obtained when Ru-surfactants are used to template the silicate formation. In this method, the silicate is templated on the actual lyotropic mesophase and the Ru is left behind in the pores when the material is calcined, generating very small (10 A) particles. The work proposed will begin by developing new metal losurfactants that can be similarly used to template silicate formation giving access to a range of different metal precursors; detailed studies of the lyotropic liquid crystal properties of the metallosurfactants will be undertaken. The resulting phase diagrams will allow optimum conditions for templating to be identified. The new catalysts then obtained will be characterised by a variety of techniques and then screened in a range of catalytic reactions. The next step will be the development of bimetallic catalysts, formed through templating the silicate on a mesophase composed of two different surfactants, with optimum conditions having been identified through the construction of ternary phase diagrams. The new bimetallic catalysts will also be screened for catalytic activity.
