In the few weeks since the discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 became known publicly, we have made significant contributions to an understanding of the prospects for practical application of this material. This work has been possible because of the skilled and experienced team of PDRA's that we have involved with EPSRC-funded Grants on a range of activities related to the High Temperature Superconductors. The purpose of the present proposal is to recruit a skilled PDRA to join the team, so that we can take forward the MgB2 exploratory work rapidly and in parallel with that on HTS. We will continue to focus particularly on approaches that enhance performance, in respect of both high current-low frequency and of microwave applications. We will select carefully from the wide range of processing and characterisation (structural, chenical and super-conductive) techniques available to us, and aim to identify viable routes to increasing the critical current density in conductors at fields and temperatures of practical interest, and to reducing the microwave losses at GHz frequencies.One strand already identified to be taken forward arises from our preliminary study of irradiation effects. They demonstrate that a small amount of atomic disorder enhances the critical current density greatly at higher fields - crucial for conductor applications. We aim to find scaleable routes to generating the appropriate disorder.
