Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent work carried out at Surrey's Institute of Sound Recording, in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, has been concerned with understanding and modelling people's perception of the spatial attributes of sound. These spatial attributes include sound source location, but also extend to such factors as listener envelopment, apparent source width and spaciousness. This work has led to the development of a novel acoustic measurement technique. Initial studies indicate that variations on this measurement will accurately predict human perception of spatial sound attributes. The proposed research builds on these studies and is designed to develop a set of perceptually motivated measurements of spatial sound attributes for analysis and characterisatrion of audio-based information systems. The new measurement set will enable perceptually valid evaluations of sound reproduction and synthesis systems and of natural acoustic environments without the need for expensive and time-consuming listening tests. The proposed work will investigate the specific acoustic parameters that contribute to spatial attributes of sound and correlate these with human auditory perception; will develop a set of appropriate spatial audio test signals; will develop and evaluate the new measurements; and will embody the measurements in a self-contained software application which can be made available to the beneficiaries described below.
