Summary on Grant Application Form |
Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. Afield test is proposed in which an existing 2. 4x2. 4m rigid reinforced concrete foundation will be tested to failure by applying large vertical loads in a safe and controlled manner. The foundation, which was cast in 1990, has experienced a relatively high level of maintained load for eleven years. Use will be made of precise surveying and any functioning instrumentation to maximise the scope of the field observations. We are not aware of any comparable prior study into the behaviour of aged preloaded foundations, and the information gained should have relevance to engineering areas such as: urban regeneration, the recommissioning of offshore structures and the upgrading of transport facilities. The field work which will be carried out at the minimum cost, will involve a team from Imperial College, London and Trinity College, Dublin. The data gathered should provide the key starting point for further theoretical and practical research.
