Summary on Grant Application Form |
ft has recently been shown that in many wireless communication channels much increased capacilies are available by the use of multiple receive and transmit antennas, togetiw with Space-Trine coding techniques. Turbo-codes are also well known to provide performance very dose to tile capacity bound for wireless channels, with feasible decoder complexities. This research will investigate the application of turbo-codes in space-time coded systems, in order to achieve in practical systems tike capacities theoretically available in multi-antenna systems. Both code design and decoding issues (based on the iterative decoder for turbo-codes) will be considered, as well as channel estimation and synchronisation. The resulting systems are expected to be applicable to both mobile and fixed (including fired wireless access) systems, and to tactical military communications. It will also investigate tike potential of adaptive space-time coded systems to reduce interference in cellular network architectures by ensuring that the signal is transmitted only in the directions required. This will also reduce probability of interception in military systems.
