Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is concerned with modelling the fluctuating velocity--pressure gradient correlations that appear in the Reynolds-stress equations. The conventional approach to modelling these correlations has been to split them into two terms (pressure redistribution and pressure diffusion) that are then treated separately. An unsatisfactory aspect of this treatment is the universal neglect of the pressure diffusion term from engineering computational methods due to lack of clear evidence regarding its role and importance. A better approach, we believe, is to model the original term in its entirety without recourse to such arbitrary re-arrangement. This can be achieved by utilising recently-obtained results from Tensor Representation Theory which enable the representation of the original term (a fourth-order tensor function) in terms of known or knowable tensors of order two and three. The drawback with this approach is the complexity of the final outcome. This proposal is aimed at finding simplified forms of the general result that are both computationally practicable and rational. This will be achieved by the identification and application of suitable mathematical and physical constraints, and by making deductions based on published results from Direct Numerical and Large Eddy Simulations of benchmark shear flows.
