Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is aimed at the elucidation of the morphology of semi-crystalline polymers modified with supercritical scC02. Confocal Raman microscopy will be applied to study the depth profile of scC02-induced morphological changes (e.g. crystallinity) in polymers such as PET and sPS. These microstructural and morphological changes will also be studied with ATR-IR and FTIR Imaging spectroscopy. The combination of these methods will reveal the factors affecting the distribution of crystalline domains induced by scC02 within the polymer samples. Impregnation of dye molecules into these polymers can provide samples with potentially new properties. Confocal Raman microscopy will be used to guide the optimisation of the conditions at which the trapping of dye molecules within the helical crystalline domains of sPS occurs. A broader aim is to facilitate the use of scC02 for polymer processing by finding new ways to produce novel polymeric materials and revealing underlying principles in such types of polymer processing.
