Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to explore and develop methods for the fabrication of nanotips, with tips radius on the scale <100nm, and to investigate the field emission properties of the tips, with a view to applications in two areas: (i) molecular detection (gas sensing) in the gas phase, via measurements of the electron transport properties of the gas; (ii) analysis of surface chemical composition, by Scanning Probe Energy Loss Spectroscopy (SPELS), with a projected spatial resolution down to ~ 10nm. The project exploits the laboratory's expertise in both nanofabrication and electron scattering.
