Recent developments in cold and microwave thermal spraying (CMTS) allow the coating process to be considered for many different applications with a wide range of coatings and substrates. This project will investigate the application of these processes to automotive applications. Two main application areas will be considered. a) The localised strengthening of pressed tailored blanks to provide the required mechanical properties without having to strengthen the whole sub-section thus reducing weight. b) A new concept of wiring harness, where the electrical conductors are integrated into the vehicle body shell by using a spray technique. This reduces the weight and eliminates the expensive manual fabrication and installation of the wiring harness, thus leading towards fully automated vehicle manufacture. These techniques will be applicable to aluminium, steel, composites and ceramic structures. The research and development programme will be undertaken by a group of 5 partners. Based upon the programme results it is anticipated that lighter vehicles with better fuel economy and safer structures will be obtained at a lower cost.
