Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main emphasis in this study will be on designing or modifying existing road studs or rumble strip designs so that a vehicle radar can be used to sense their positlon. The reflected radar signal could then be used to steer or stop a vehicle automatically or to activate a warning system for the driver. A jaguar car equipped with a radar-based cruise control system and the MIRA test track will be used for the study. Prismo will provide the technology for modifying road stud and rumble strip designs. The initial 12 month project will proceed on two fronts1) Exlstlng road-stud designs will be examined and modified to incorporate one or more radar reflectors. Embedding the stud witnin a layer of radartransparent plastic, rubber or other material may be used to protect the vehicle lyres.2)Exisling rumble-strip designs will be examined and modified to provide a suitable radar regactlon.
