Summary on Grant Application Form
Rare earth (RE) silicate- and germanate-based apatites have attracted a lot of interest recently due to their high oxide ion conductivity. Little is known about them, other than that they have high oxide ion conductivity. Preliminary investigations have shown these materials to east as solid solutions and that chemi doping on the RE and/or SI/Ge sites can enhance the conductivity. For example, we have shown that AI doping for Si can dramatically increase the conductivity by 2 orders of magnitude. A systematic study into the synthesis, processing and characterisation of this family of phases is proposed, incorporating phase diagram studies to determine the doping mechanisms and solid solution limits for various isovalent/aliovalent dopants, structure determination by diffraction methods, ceramic processing to produce dense ceramics with uniform microstructures and electrical property measurements. should provide fundamental knowledge of this new family of materials and establish the processing conditions required to manufacture dense ceramics frc which an assessment of their possible exploitation as oxide ion conducting electrolytes will be made.
