Summary on Grant Application Form
A range of cyclic and linear polythioethers will be synthesised and characterised using NMR techniques (diffusion and relaxation) and rheology, in conjunction with small-angle neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction. Studies will be undertaken to quantify concentration and molecular weight scaling behaviours of the conformation of the polymers, and self-diffusion coefficient and relaxation times to probe the global and local dynamics of the polymers (respectively). Reheology will be used to characterise any molecular entanglements. Subsequently, mixtures of these architectures will be examined to quantify the effects of ring threading . Further, small polythioethers can sequester heavy metal ions, thereby including significant changes in the polymer conformation. These perturbations will be examined as functions of metal ion, type, concentration and both polymer molecular weight and architecture.
