Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to appoint a Professor of Bioanalytical Science to join a flourishing community of researchers in Analytical Science within three highly rated departments: Chemistry, Instrumentation and Analytical Science, and Biomolecular Sciences. The combined Departments provide a high level of analytical expertise and advanced instrumentation, and a research environment that fosters inter-disciplinary research. The appointment will be made in the field of postgenome science, an emerging, high profile area of research that provides both substantial challenges and enormous potential rewards to Analytical Science. The opportunities are greatly enhanced by the proposed establishment of the North West Consortium for Post-Genome Science, a large group of researchers from UMIST, the University of Liverpool, the University of Manchester and the Daresbury Laboratory. The new consortium will devise, develop and exploit fundamentally new technologies. The impact of the new Chair appointment will be enhanced by interactions with this scientifically broad consortium, which has established links to a large user community including industry and the health professions. Furthermore the appointee will contribute to the training of analytical research scientists, in an area of research where the demands of industry substantially exceed the availability of individuals with appropriate expertise. The balance of salary support for this position not requested here (and its entirety after five years) is guaranteed by UMIST. Additional financial support is already both committed and anticipated from the instrument and pharmaceutical/biotechnology industries.
